Two days after Christmas last year, Jon Sandstrom was up early, heading south with his kids to hunt for agates (a type of gemstone) near Pescadero, Calif. He captured this beautiful scene en route.

"I took the shot in the morning just as the sun was coming up over the coastal mountains," he told TODAY.com.

Travel photo of the day: Impala spotted in Botswana

Submitted by James Pham / UGC

    Impala, Chobe, Botswana

James Pham spotted this beautiful impala while on a safari in Botswana's Chobe National Park.

    Follow @msnbc_travel

Pham told TODAY.com that he took the picture at 6 a.m. on an early-morning game drive. "It was the birthing time of year, so tons of impala and springbok babies were around, testing out their spindly new legs, bounding and leaping," he said.

Still, it wasn't easy to capture them on camera. "Taking photos of animals is frustratingly challenging because they never seem to do what you want or expect them to do," he said. "This shot turned out perfect because the impala looked at me dead on."

Pham writes about his travels and posts photos on his website fly, Icarus, fly.

Travel photo of the day: Crater Lake in winter

Submitted by Katie Cornett / UGC

    Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Katie Cornett was on a seven-day solo trip from Santa Monica, Calif. up coastal Highway 1 and into Oregon when she took this photo of Crater Lake in November 2011.

"The winter sky and the water were the most incredible shade of blue, especially in contrast to the fresh white snow," Cornett told TODAY.com. "I would have liked to stay all day, but at 27 degrees Fahrenheit at the viewpoint, I snapped a few pictures and scurried back to my car through the snow.

"There is something about a body of water in the winter, surrounded by snow, that is quite peaceful and eerily calm," Cornett added.

Travel photo of the day: Famous Victoria Falls

Submitted by Jared Bombaci / UGC

    Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Jared Bombaci took this photo of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe last October.

"It was a very bright day, which made the colors in the rocks look almost fake, although intermittent cloud cover made getting the right exposure tough," Bombaci told TODAY.com.

He spent the day wading around tidal pools on the Zambia border of the falls. Bombaci travels extensively in Africa for work and spends much of his free time taking photos.

Travel photo of the day: Snorkeling in the Bahamas

Submitted by Jean Chisser / UGC

Snorkeling off the Exuma Islands in the Bahamas.

Jean Chisser and her husband spent part of March snorkeling off the Exuma islands in the Bahamas. On the second day of their trip, the couple happened upon Pirate Trap beach, where they found a great snorkeling spot as well as a beautiful beach.

    Follow @msnbc_travel

"The day was one of those 'perfect' days (like most in the Exumas) with blue skies and white puffy clouds," Chisser told TODAY.com. "The sun was still pretty high in the sky and helped make the beautiful aqua water shine."

Chisser used a fish-eye lens to curve the image of her husband, Skip, snorkeling.

Chisser is a semi-professional photographer, and more of her photos are featured on her website.

The south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge appears above the evening fog as the suns sets on the Marin Headlands in Sausalito, Calif.

When the Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 28, 1937, the San Francisco Chronicle called it a $35 million dollar steel harp. Its 4,200-foot-long suspension span was the longest in the world, not surpassed until 1964.

    Follow @msnbc_travel

Nowadays it's a beloved icon for tourists and locals alike, with an average of 110,000 vehicles passing over it each day. We've rounded up some of the bridge's best moments in this slideshow.

Story: Golden Gate Bridge links lovers for a lifetime

Numerous events and tributes are marking the bridge's 75th anniversary. When the bridge was completed, Chief Engineer Joseph P. Strauss wrote two poems, one of which starts:

    At last the mighty task is done;
    Resplendent in the western sun
    The Bridge looms mountain high;
Its titan piers grip ocean floor,
Its great steel arms link shore with shore,
    Its towers pierce the sky.

Travel photo of the day: Alaska's snow-covered spruce

Snow-covered black spruce north of the Yukon, Alaska.

Gretchen Griswold, of San Diego, Calif., recently decided to fulfill her dream of seeing the aurora borealis, the glow of stars and color that is otherwise known as the northern lights. She traveled to Alaska in March with her sister-in-law and encountered this snow-covered landscape north of the Yukon.

"We hired a guide to take us up to the Arctic Circle and the drive took us through ghostly landscapes of frozen trees and tundra," Griswold told TODAY.com. "As we drove, I was awed by the vista presented by these trees and asked the guide to pull off the road so we could walk (or really, stomp through knee-deep snow) a little so we could get a better vantage point."

Griswold said it was -23 degrees, with an estimated -20 degree wind chill, when she took the photo. "It was a quick drill to capture the scene," she said.

Travel photo of the day: The beach at Whytecliff Park

Submitted by Ray Snook / UGC

Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Ray Snook captured this idyllic scene at Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver, British Columbia, in February.

Snook had visited the park the day before, but it was pouring rain during high tide.

"Conditions improved the next afternoon with low tide, clear skies and just enough white clouds to fill the frame," Snook told TODAY.com. "I took pictures along the beach, and from the cliffs above the beach of snow-covered mountains."
