22 Carnival Cruise passengers robbed at gunpoint on ship-sponsored tour in Mexico

Updated at 12:30 p.m. ET -- Twenty-two passengers on Carnival Splendor were robbed at gunpoint Thursday while on a ship-sponsored tour in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

At least one Mexican media outlet said the passengers were returning by bus to their ship at approximately 5 p.m. after spending time in El Nogalito, a tourist area known for its lush natural setting. Masked assailants stopped the bus and robbed the cruisers of their money, watches, cameras and other valuables.

There were no injuries and all passengers were returned safely to the ship, Carnival said in a statement. Numerous authorities were notified and responded to investigate, as well as assist the affected passengers, Carnival said.

According to informador.mx.com, the bandits have yet to be apprehended.

Carnival apologized to the passengers for the "unfortunate and disturbing event" and said it is working with passengers to reimburse them for lost valuables and assist with lost passports or other forms of identification.

On Saturday, Latitude Intl, the public relations firm representing the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, called Thursday's robbery an "extremely rare incident." A statement on Latitude's Facebook page said, "minutes after we learned of the incident representatives from the local and state government, tourism leaders and tour operators [moved] to provide assistance to those involved and police and the district's attorney office started their investigation."

The tour in question — a guided nature trail excursion sold and booked through the line — has been suspended until further notice.

More from Cruise Critic:

The incident comes at a rough time for the beleaguered Mexican Riviera cruise region, which has seen numerous lines pull out over safety and security concerns, as well as issues with demand. Lines have primarily cut calls in Mazatlan, which has seen its scheduled ship visits plummet from 200 in 2010 to roughly a dozen in 2012, but Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta have also suffered.

The U.S. State Department advises Americans to exercise caution when traveling to Mexico. Earlier this month, the department released its latest travel warning, updating one that had been in effect since April 2011. As with the earlier warning, it reiterated that millions of Americans safely visit the country every year and that most of the drug-related violence occurs near the Mexico-U.S. border and along drug-trafficking routes, rather than in resort towns and other tourist destinations.

The Carnival Splendor made headlines in November 2010 after an onboard fire paralyzed the ship for three days about 200 miles outside San Diego and stranded thousands of passengers. The repaired ship set sail again last February with two new generators and a new engine.

Carnival Splendor is currently sailing on a seven-day cruise that departed Long Beach, Calif., on Sunday.

These 22 people are just part of the moronic segment of the population who don't or won't believe all the reports about Mexi-hole and pretend nothing will happen to them. They're the same segment who will stand in the driveway, smiling and waving goodbye to their college kids as they go there on spring break only to have the American consulate in Mexi-hole call them a few days later to have them come down to pick up their kids hacked up body parts or to tell them that they've been taken hostage and to bring large sums of money in 50s and 100s. I can't feel sorry for them.

I was in the Yucatan Peninsula in 2005. Talking with one of the tour guides about Mexico in general, the subject of the drugs and crime came up. I told her good that it wasn't affecting the tourist areas. She said it was not as bad in the tourist areas as in some other places, but it was still bad there, just that it doesn't get reported.

Not going back to Mexico. Anywhere in Mexico, until the situation there makes drastic improvements.

I was on that tour once. Riding burros into the jungle. But this was back in the 80's. And I was there again in 2000. Still nice, but they outright told you to leave nothing in your rental car and leave the doors unlocked. We made the mistake of leaving our map in the car. It was gone when we returned.
Now, I wouldn't set foot in Mexico.

If you try Mexico, in its present climate, you are literally taking your life in your own hands. It is absolutely too dangerous to travel anywhere in Mexico today, whether it's a tourist area on or near one of the coasts, or within the interior of the country. Entirelly too dangerous!!!

Mehico is a volatile and dangerous place nowadays and that includes the resort areas, evidenced by this example. It's not burying your head in the sand or being paranoid by avoiding the area- it's simple common sense. That is, unless you enjoy being kidnapped & held for ransom or worse- shot & killed

And yet just a week or so ago there was some Mexican gov. official say that it was perfectly safe to travel in the tourist areas of Mexico.

When John Dillinger was asked why he robbed banks he said it is because "thats where the money is". And the Mexican bandits are also going to go where the money is. Save a lot of money and still enjoy a nice vacation here in the U.S. Create a job for an American.

What is surprising about this??? Absolutely NOTHING!!! And that reference to the Mexican authorities were called to investigate--- YEAH RIGHT! Mexican authorities are part of the problem. It's a corrput kleptocracy whose sole function is to secure the U.S. government's complicity in their ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION SCHEME to ensure that Mexican foreign nationals send their U.S. blackmarket labor funds back to Mexico!

One minor correction: It was Willie Sutton, not Dillinger, who made the droll bank-robbery quip.

Aren't you really, really glad you aren't a salesman (or woman) for a cruise line that goes to Mexico?

Jeez. What kind of IDIOTS would set foot in Mexico given all we all know about the fact it is utterly, totally corrupt in every way, shape and form imaginable - from corrupt police; to corrupt politicians to you name it - and if you do you will find it is corrupt!

Sadly, there will be no change in Mexico - ever - as long as we allow America to be Mexico's and all of the hell hole that basically all of South America is, to use America as their "pressure release valve". Mexico will not change because it doesn't have to change; the powers that be who have what they want in terms of wealth and position know very well that as long as they can keep shipping their overpopulation, lack of employment, lack of opportunity problems North and let the stupid Gringos - lead by someone who is perfectly willing to look the other way in return for the Hispanic vote - to America then they need not worry about the political and social system getting to the boiling point where their useless hides will be at risk of being nailed to the barn door as they so richly deserve to be nailed.

At some point, hopefully sooner rather than later, we are going to have to get someone in Washington, D. C. who is truly concerned about America's future as a nation and not ass kissing "friends" who are more enemy than friend; someone who is willing to say "enough is enough" and take the actions necessary to stand up for our country and actually do something to truly begin solving the problem, rather than worry more about getting himself re-elected so he can squander another four years of opportunity to get the country on track.

In the meantime, anyone stupid enough to go to Mexico - for any reason should be deemed lost and unworthy of anyone taking any risk to save them. If someone deliberately sticks their hand in a meat grinder and ends up with no hand - who is to blame and should we feel sorry for them? No, because they did it to themselves.

I went on a Carnival cruise last year and they tout their ship-sponsored shore excursions as safe and warn you that if you don't pay the inflated prices for the excursions they sponsor, you are taking a real chance... Wonder what their line will be now. By the way, the best shore excursion we ever took was not sponsored by the cruise line... ATV riding in the jungle followed by cave tubing in Belize.... If you are ever there, I recommend it... cavetubeing.dot.com.

Keep reporting on these stories, MSNBC!!! It's the only way both the US and Mexican gov'ts will be pressured to take action, not only in cracking down on the crime in Mexico, but the security of the US Border.

Shame on the Mexican gov't for sweeping the crime issue under the rug for so long. The more power you give to the drug cartels, the more they will want to take. Making their own citizens suffer won't be enough and we will see more tourists targeted in the open. More than what the media can choose not to cover. I hope these incident will be publicized more often and tourism dires up as a result!

To all the bleeding hearts out there: We cannot cherry pick and weed out who the "good people" are with good intentions sneaking over the border. Either way the law is being broken and if these criminals aren't afraid of coming after Foreigners on vacation they won't be afraid to attack residents on the US side either. Just because you might not be affected by border violence living on the east coast or midwest, doesn't mean that US citizens in AZ, CA, TX or NM should be pressured and forced by you to act so PC that they can't protect themselves!

    • 7 votes
    #2.29 - Sat Feb 25, 2012 3:09 PM EST

As long as we allow law breakers and criminals to cross our borders, take our jobs, and collect our tax monies in the form of welfare and social services, this is only going to start happening here on a more frequent basis. And if you think you are immune because you live in some east coast blue state, think again. They are spreading throughout our country and headed for a community near you. When your kid gets killed or you get personally robbed by them you might start to look at things differently, but by then it will be too late. The damage will be permanent.

    2 initiatives need to happen:

    1) Investigate Border Patrol Agents, Police Officers and even judges that have even a tiny wiff of corruption. Weed out the ones that are getting paid off and throw the book at them. Show those who might even be contemplating making deals with the cartels that jail time isnt worth the $$$.

    2) No more federal blocking of enforcing laws that are already on the books. There has been a law on the books since the 1940s that requires all non-citizens to carry their work visas or other papers AT ALL TIMES. How are we to enforce this if provisions continue to be blocked that empower law enforcement to check? What the hell is the point of that law if no one gets asked for their papers? Either amend the existing law and be upfront about your complete lack of intention to enforce it, or enforce the damn law!!! No more fence straddling BS!!!

And if you are an opposer of SB1070 ask yourself this: When I visit Europe or any other country where I am required to carry my passport, do I feel as if my civil rights are being violated? Then apply that logic to foreigners over here. If I can't visit or get a job in any other country without the proper documentation, then why the hell is it a problem to enforce that rule in my own country???

The cruise industry has not been doing a bang up job on PR this year. Except the Itallian cruise liner ! If you're lucky you'll get some kind of food poisoning. Other attractions include taking a Queen Mary size ship. through the no wake zone. Lastly, the ultimate retreat where the locals take your souvenirs. What other brilliant ideas, boogie boarding off Somalia, port of call Syria, wine tasting in Fukashima ? Instead of saying," amigo " in Mexico. I think the statement should be " am I free to go ".

    Pedestrian-in SF,

I think the potential loss of tourist $$$ pales in comparison to the $$$ the mexican government is making from the drug cartels, and other criminal activities. And the mexican government can always get a few more billion of our tax dollars in the form of aid to help them fight their own corruption, like we don't have a problem with that here. How's the crime rate, and the financial status of your "sanctuary city/state" where twelve year olds can get condoms through the mail on my tax dollars?

Do you honestly think there's no drug and people smuggling coming from Canada and into the US? Are you that naive? Sure, it's not in the same amounts as through the southern border but it does happen.
You ask why there's no cartels in Canada or why Canadians aren't fleeing to the US. Here are the answers:
1- There are no cartels in Canada because they are not South of the US and in between the millions of American drug addicts and the drug producers.
2- Why would Canadians want to flee to a country that's inferior economically, educationally and is full of corrupt politicians?

With most middle class college-attending people complaining about the cost of going to college, how is it they can STILL afford to go on "Spring break"? What do they need a break from, anyway? All the partying they do after attending class?

College is a time for continued growing up. Anyone who goes on Spring break or a parent who provides the money for their young adult to go on Spring break, needs a shot of reality. Tuition and books are bonifide education costs. Partying and Spring break expenses are NOT!! I don't feel sorry for the 4-year degree person being in debt after graduation -- unless he/she never partied or went on Spring break, and then he/she worked and earned some money during break times. The debt is for wants, not needs. It's about time they learned the difference.

The NRA is obviously lobbying Mexican politicians in support of the second amendment. If only Mexico would outlaw private ownership of guns then gun violence would disappear!

Yep, curtailing gun ownership is really going to cut down on the number of crooks OBTAINING and USING weapons against citizens and businesses.

Great idea. You have now passed the resume test for this Administration and work at the DHS.

Mexican authorities seem completely impotent in the face of their growing culture of violence? Well, get over it and do something about it because it is now affecting the security of American citizens. If Mexico cannot handle their drug cartels, instead of whining about the supply of weapons from the United States, they need to solicit the aid of the United States Military in eradicating this threat that is overlapping our borders. Enough is enough. If the Mexican authorities refuse the help of our military, and since we can invade countries halfway around the world to protect our interests, invading Mexico should be a bargain and we can finally have some security on our Southern Border! These drug terrorists are more of a threat than any Islamic group that we have faced and need to be stamped out like the roaches that they are.

What about these rumors I’ve heard that the Mexican drug cartels are starting to team up with
Middle Eastern terrorist types? Apparently drug money is how the ME terrorists are
getting money for their own worldwide terrorist activities – and they also like
being in closer proximity to the USA.

        From Chester:

Everyone man in Mexico owns a gun and you can buy anything you want illegally. Matter of fact if you are a person living in Mexico, it would be foolish not to own a gun. 90% of all kidnappings are not reported. I rather have a gun and have shot it out with kidnappers than be taken.

The last people you want to report a crime to is the police in Mexico. Once they see what you have in your house, you are on the list to be robbed.

Exactly what I was trying to point out to people in a recent article I wrote on my own Vine page, "Guns and the United States".

In that article, I explicity stated (quite a few times actually) that banning guns wasn't an option anymore. It would be nice to live in a world without guns, but the gun nuts have taken that option away. (They have had a lot of help from drug obsessed people - both the ones who use drugs and the ones obsessed with treating drugs like a religious sin.)

The point of the article was a really just a sigh of sadness that we are doomed spiral into a hell of violence and death ... something we can see very, very clearly in a country that is simply ahead of us on that trip down.

The problem is that plenty of criminals also flood over here with the honest Mexicans. I used to work at a place that printed the INS watch list (a listing of dangerous fugitive illegals) - it was 3000 dual-sided 8 1/2" x 11" pages of 6 pt. type, half-spaced and chock full of mostly Hispanic sounding names.

I know a couple who leased a home/property for 99 years (that's correct, USA citizens can't own property in Mexico) and put nearly a quarter of a million into modernizing it, swimming pool and so on. Now they can't even go there because they're afraid of being kidnapped for ransom. The place is too "rich looking". For all they know the cartels have taken it over.

But Mexicans can come here illegally, send their kids to our schools on our money, get medical, own property and even serve in the Military for citizenship.

            What's wrong with this picture?

Ask the liberals on this one. They are not going to be happy until we are just like Mexico or worse.

The ones who have come here are only here until they earn enough to build the big house in Mexico and or buy enough cattle to be a big rancher. I know this becaus I work beside these guys and in the last 5 years have seen about 10 of them send enough back home( by living 15 to a house) and once they hit the magic number they go back. All the while lving here on your and my dime.

They claim to not be able to become citizens or speak the language as it is to hard. Yet they seem to be bright enough to find any and all loopholes in all our systems that they can exploit!

Robert ... best do some homework. The laws changed several years ago and it is legal for "non-citizens" to own property in Mexico. I have friends who have a lovely home in PV. I live in Central Mexico and have a home there. Here's some math for you ... I lived in Whatcom County of Washington State for 9 years and was robbed twice in Seattle. Why? Because I had to go to a Federal Government Office that was in a bad section of the city. On the flip side ... have lived in Mexico for 9 years and have yet to have EVEN ONE unpleasant experience. The bottom line ... be aware of where you are ... wherever you are. THIS IS NOT A PERFECT WORK. For that clown who said he would rather vacation in Egypt? LOTSA LUCK DUMMY ... YOU'RE GOING TO NEED IT!!

What is the rate for exchange, in pesos and dollars, of kidnap victims returned: (a) alive; (b) not alive; (c) not at all? Be prepared: many Mexicans think all Americans are rich. So if you have less than they want, it could turn out badly. I also am just a bit dismayed off by that attitude; I am among the many who are not rich.

50,000 killings sends several messages. One message is: 50,000 fewer messengers.

Hotel prices are disproportionately high when you take into account the risk. Mexico is a beautiful country, but I think I'd prefer Canada right now.

The "criminals" are financed by U.S. citizens. The cartels did not ,could not, cannot ,and would not exist if citizens of the United States did not support them. Luckily,Mexico is not powerful enough militarily to retaliate against the "friendly neighbor" that makes its not too distant destruction a very real possibility.
