American Airlines pilot not smiling after Baldwin 'SNL' spoof

An American Airlines pilot isn’t smiling after Alec Baldwin’s surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend.

“I was disappointed that it was making light of something that’s fairly serious and also was poking fun at a group of employees that are very proud and a historic airline who are going through a tough period right now,” said Steve Roach, a real American Airlines pilot.

Following Alec Baldwin's fake apology to himself on NBC's "SNL," an American Airlines pilot speaks out. NBC's  Jeff Rossen reports.

During SNL’s “Weekend Update,” Baldwin was introduced as Captain Steve Rogers, and appeared in a pilot’s uniform, mustache and speaking with a southern accent.

I have been a faithful AA executive flier for over 15 years (Platinum). Having said that, I no longer fly AA. Their treatment of passengers has much to be desired these days. The attendants don't want to hear a peep out of any passengers. They bang those damned carts against the isle passenger elbows and knees and it REALLY HURTS. Besides NEVER apologizing for the physical aggression they will shut you up if you complain with this unruly passenger crap which really would irritate anybody. They seem to have forgotten the service part of their job. They definitely have forgotten the service with a SMILE part. I don't blame Baldwin for loosing his cool. I NEVER got an apology from AA for the physical pains I have suffered at their hands so I see Baldwins skit on SNL as really funny AND TRUE.

Digital games and or Wifi is something they want to control in the cabin so that they can eventually figure out how to make money and profit on it. I think that this is the reason they want passengers to shut them off. As an electronic engineer and pilot I do not see any harm digital electronic s can do to interfere with aircraft operations.

Flight attendants are not there to serve you drinks or fellate your little ego. They're there to get your sorry butt off the airplane safely in an emergency and to keep you from using your techno toys to crash the airplane. Bozo Baldwin better get acquainted with Greyhound and Amtrak.

When you pay to fly in first or business class your experience includes service WITH A SMILE. That is what you are paying extra for. Economy is also entitled to service with a smile, good treatment, and whatever else may be needed by any particular passenger. The level of service is determined by the number of flight attendant per passenger. The quality of food and drink also changes with the class of service. Finally, communication and some psychological skills training should be a part of attendant training.

Thats right Peter, I fly AA and I like it and I don't care about your personal comments about the AA. My primary goal is to get to my destination on time, and happy. If I want a good meal, I'll go to a restaurant , not an airline. I don't go to a restaurant to fly, so don't complain about the food. Having flown for years on business, my impression is that it's NOT the flight crews who are rude, it's a lot of narcissist, ego driven people who fly and expect to be treated like 'royals'. I thought the skit was amusing, but it just goes to show that Alec is a buffoon. He'll take an incident in which he acted without class, and tease others in an ego-stroking, arrogant manner.

I guess if you don't like AA, don't fly with them. If you have legitimate gripes, also make a complaint and tell your friends. The way *not* to handle it is to disrespect the staff and throw a fit about your iPad, then mock them further on national TV.

There is no reason whatsoever that plane cannot pull back from a terminal, taxi, and takeoff with or without every person on board playing Words with Friends. The same electromagnetic radiation that allows him to play is there regardless. It won't affect the plane if he is playing or not. If he wasn't playing, his phone can still query and pick up e-mail, receive a call that isn't answered, or do whatever. It is a total myth that electronic devices can affect an airplane. The avionics are specifically designed to NOT be influenced by external RF.

I haven't flown on American since 1963. With their inflated cost of a ticket, I do not fly that airline. I would assume that Baldwin believed that in First Class, the food would be First Class too! Obviously, he is/was speaking from his experiences in the past too...

LMAO The comment that an iPad would cause a plane to crash is hysterical. If that were the case there would crashed planes all over the continent. It's just a way to punish the passengers because microwave signals are all over the airwaves. Even the people in the airport terminal are talking on the phone and the plane is receiving those signals just as if they were on the plane. There has never been proof of any plane ever being grounded because of cell phones except the ignorance of the airlines and the FAA.

One study concluded that mobile phones used in the cabin could exceed the rated allowable interference levels for some avionics installed in aircraft. On the other hand, links between device use and actual system failures have not been proven, nor have the reported incidents been reproduced in ground tests.

In other words people, its a hoax by the FAA and the airlines. A theory that has never been proven. If it were true they would not allow any cell phone towers anywhere near an airport because they put out much more signal than individual cell phones and since airports are usually the highest land around they are prime locations for cell towers. I know for a fact that Charleston WV airport is on top of a mountain and there are cell towers all around it. Its a hoax people.

American Airlines should be careful not to completely alienate first and business class customers that pay for those expensive seats. Those seats sell for a premium and that revenue would be surely missed if those seats were instead always filled with frequent fliers travelling with upgrades.

The inconvenience for AA, however, is that those customers require a certain level of service in return. Baldwin's behavior probably wasn't the best, but I can only cringe when I imagine how the flight attendant behaved. It takes 2 to tango, and passengers in that class expect more than the standard bad attitude that pervades the coach cabins usually.

And the pilot is paid handsomely for being a glorified bus driver. This guy just wanted his name in the paper.

When considering words, one must always consider the source. Let's consider your words Alan, especially the 'aholes' part and the 'happy' part. Happiness is always such a fleeting thing when other people's words can personally insult you. Utilizing words such as 'aholes' suggests having lost control of your emotions. Suggestion for a cure. Personally, I'd rather err on the side that it may cause an issue and not allow the use of electronic devices for 10 - 20 minutes during a flight. Its a far safer assumption than yours. If Mr. Baldwin can't comply with a rule, then he needs to fly on private aircraft. He needs to apologies to the flight crew for his obscene behavior. I won't ask you to prove a negative because you cannot prove your statement, but that's not really the point. The point is that there were a lot of fellow passengers inconvenienced by Baldwin's refusal to turn it off. If he didn't care about how AA, the FAA and the TSA run things, then he could at least care about being polite to everyone else who was made to be late. The FAs are only there to enforce the rules. They don't make them. If you have a problem with the rules then don't fly or talk to your congressperson about changing them. And it's not like he was trying to make a statement or anything. He just wanted to play a game. I don't fly if I can drive, because it's become such a PITA, but when I do fly then I abide by the law.

According the USAF, USMC and USN flyers I work with, electronic gadgets DO have an effect on the aircraft systems. And the more gadgets operating, the greater the effect.

Would you want to be on the plane that hit that critical overload because one self-important jerkwad HAS to play his game?

The regulations are there for a reason, not because the head of the FAA decided to invent something to make passengers unhappy.

Seriously, you gonna go with better err on the safe side thing? There is nothing to err because there is no danger you moron.

#2.5 - Mon Dec 12, 2011 3:44 PM EST

Sorry to say this Terelyn but if you have USAF, USMC and USN pilots telling you this then they have bold faced lied to you. Modern air crafts controls and navigation is very well shielded from electrical, analog and digital interference. Most international safety boards have already cleared all electric devices as safe for use. And most all international carriers have already begun providing wifi access to passengers cell phones, iPads and laptops when flying cross Atlantic & Pacific.

The senators who oversee the FAA are well lobbied by the airlines. The moment the FAA says that electronics are not a danger the airlines know that they will loose all ability to charge for internet access when fly domestically.

We're talking about multi-million dollar aircraft here. Aircraft that, to my knowledge at least, are still operated via hardwired computers and not wireless signals

How about putting in some EM shielding, especially around the passenger compartments? Pretty sure metal acts as a shield, so where exactly is the problem? My desktop motherboard has EM shielded components in it, yet a passenger jet doesn't?

AA blew this out of proportion and Alec is having a laugh at them just like Jon Stewart has a laugh at the hypocrisy in America as a whole

G Camomescro disagree a bit, because this wasn't the flight crew's rule about the electronic devices, it's an FAA rule. I'm sure his iPad wouldn't bring down the plane but why couldn't he just do what everyone else has to do, and turn it off? I have a hard time believing Jon Stewart would so misdirect his laughter at the people who are just doing their reasonable job.

No Dr Larry. Stupid is believing that electronic equipment can cause a plane to crash when the electronic equipment are all around in the form of cell towers which broadcast the same cell phone signal 24 hours a day. Its a hoax that has not every been proven.

links between device use and actual system failures have not been proven, nor have the reported incidents been reproduced in ground tests.

I guess we will always have sheep that follow alone and drink the kool-aid. The FAA should prove that there is a possibility that cell phone use can bring down a plane or drop the demand.

  • 3 votes
#2.12 - Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:27 PM EST

There is only one good reason to not use a cell phone during air travel, and that it can cause issues with cell towers trying to relay the call from cell to cell at 200 mph. That said, cell phones that have the screen off, are almost as active as phones with their screen on, and again, for any of them to even work, they are all being flooded by every providers signal, all at once, at much more power than a phone ever could. It's a stupid rule, a rule that shouldn't be there. He should have turned it off, he didn't, the flight attendant decided to make yourself feel better by asserting the power she only has when on that plane. He acted like a jerk, she acted like jerk back, everyone got delayed. She knows it won't take down the plane, so she should have asked him to put it in the pocket in front of him during take-off so in the event of a crash, it doesn't cut him in half like a sausage.

The rule shouldn't be there without a sound reason, but people should also try to work with each other. All the pieces came together; he's famous, the rule is stupid, and FA can be mean, so we all have to hear about it.

All the Avionics are shielded... Cell phones aren't going to connect at 37,000 feet - too high.

The best reason for shutting your Cell phone down is that the person next to, in front of, behind of you doesn't have to be forced to listen to you blab about this and that.

MacGyver - I agree with you except that I have been told (maybe wrongly) that it is against FAA Regs to put the Ipad/Laptops in the seat pocket in front of you - at least during Take-off and landings.

Maybe so, but in the event of a emergency landing - I think getting whacked by an errant Ipad is the least of your worries.

The reality is that Alec Baldwin, like it or not, IS a VIP, he was flying first class (likely paying serious MONEY, not a mere beneficiary of an AAdvantage upgrade), and they should have given him some slack until it was really time to shut down his toy.

It may not be egalitarian, it may not be fair, but this happens ALL THE TIME. It's the difference between a 1:8 FA:pax ratio and a 3:180 ratio. It's a cozier atmosphere, you get free booze, you get a wider seat for your fat ass, more leg room, guaranteed storage for your carryons, and you get food. It's FIRST CLASS. It's what you pay $2000 for vs. $200.

The fact that cabin attendants, even those with a specific airline, do not have anything resembling the level of training to provide a consistent and positive customer experience. Scratch that, that no airline pays any attention to customer satisfaction as an operating goal, or runs their operation as a service business, is the real root of the matter. Many seem to have a chip on their shoulders, resenting being perceived as overpayed waitresses, so they stress the safety/professional thing, and will lord the hell out of it if they get any guff.

Having sat right across from flight attendants on many occasions, there is a great variability in how they handle situations. I have had experiences ranging from Nazis telling me to stow my toys and store them the minute the door closes, to a quiet nod during the last safety check.

What it boils down to is, it was about arbitrary control. Baldwin refused to be some F/A's bitch, she got upset, and it was all downhill from there.

So what your say'n is the next time all 320 /or however many are on board a plane, all decide to not follow the law and hoard to one end of the plane, they all need to get paid to go on air and make fun of what they all did! Everyone just laugh and get over it. Rules are there for a reason. Anyone who does not want to follow the rules, made their choice to fly on that plane, nobody made them board.

I bet the passengers on the plane were very amused. I would have found it amusing if someone had taken his iPad and turned it off - permanently - over his head. Now THAT would have been funny.

I don't know why they meaning the airline employees are so 'upset' with Baldwin in the first place. Baldwin is the first to defend them when the airline wants to take away their pensions and negotiating rights yet they singled him out for this type of 'treatment'. The stewardesses are legendary for their favoritism of passengers... And what little power they have they abuse.

If you ever want to get on a flight attendant's good side, two simple words:

There is no data that says that cell phones or laptops interfere with airplanes... they are well protected... and furthermore they were sitting at the gate NOT taxing to a runway. Since most of you people don't read full stories before you spout out your stupidity know this. There were other people on the planes using the cells and this airline employee ignored the rest and picked on him... why? probably because of his celebrity hoping they could either make an ass out of him or make some money off him... either STFU and go away just like AA will be in a few short years.

Are you sure? Are you willing to risk 200 lives on an assumption? Just because there is limited data, doesn't mean it's safe. Do some research and you'll see that there are reports of EMI (electromagnetic interference) from pilots during the crucial takeoff and landing phase.

I'd be more concerned about paying attention to the emergency procedures than actually causing the plane to crash. If anthing goes wrong, its mostly likely in the first 20-30 minutes.

I have to call BS on this one (btw, I am a pilot). If this were true, every one at the gate (which the airplane had not yet left) would be asked to shut their devices. Or do you think that EMI stops at the fuselage? Realize that you are bing bombarded EVERY SECOND by some sort of microwave, RF device, etc. Now tell me how many times your automobile or other machinery has suddenly gone awry because of it? Are you telling me that aircraft instuments, which are manufactured to EXTREMELY STRINGENT standards, are somehow more delicate and vulnerable? Please.

Ever had a speaker start buzzing when you get around it with a cell phone? that's a very simple example, but true.

All electronic devices affect other electronic devices to some extent. Different devices have different levels and some are better shielded than others. No one says a cell phone by itself will "bring a plane down" but if it could possibly affect communications during takeoff or landing (the most critical parts of the flight), it should be banned during those times.

If you can't follow the rules for flying commercial, don't do it.

they could either make an ass out of him

Alec Baldwin does this to himself all the time. No effort required on anyone else's part.

It's about obeying FAA regulations and Flight Crew requests. When you buy a ticket for a flight, you've signed a legal contract to obey the flight crew and FAA regulations. Failure to do so can get you fined. Mr. Baldwin is lucky he didn't get arrested for his actions - only his celebrity saved him. Anyone else would have been arrested and charged. To the other passengers, he was a terrorist of the worst kind - a 60 old man acting like a two year old. WAAAA I CAN'T PLAY MY GAME FOR 10 MINUTES. Who TF does Alec Baldwin think he is that he should not have to abide by the same rules as everybody else--REGARDLESS IF YOU THINK THEY ARE STUPID RULES, THEY ARE STILL RULES! End of argument, he's a pretentious pri-k who embarrassed himself and pissed off a bunch of passengers who didn't ask for some haughty, self-important jerk like him to be on their plane. The plumber, the dentist nor the housewife have a stage. How is it that entertainers seem to find following rules on commercial aircraft so difficult? If they can't follow the rules that everyone else on the aircraft must, then charter a private jet. Stop making an ass of yourself and delaying everyone else on the aircraft who were simply trying to go about their business.

Steven100: Excellent post and perfect description too!

Baldwin is not famous for his lack of acting ability; he is known for being a pompous, overbearing, annoying, world class butthead-ahole.

That entire STUNT on the plane was for ONE reason: FREE Publicity for a "has been" career that is really "gasping for air, on its last legs and just isn't going anywhere".

He did "achieve his objective" and got the FREE publicity he needed... for now?

All of his SNL antics are just his "pathetic attempt at covering up and distract people from his own arrogant, immature, moronic, idiotic "I'm Alec Baldwin so I can do what I want" attitude.

Tomorrow? He'll still be "yesterday's dull news"... almost as dull as his own personality.

When reading about GREAT actors or actresses in Hollywood, most of them are really nice people... fairly humble and never come across as arrogant, rude or obnoxious. The GREAT actors are known and respected for their SKILL. Baldwin is famous for his screwed up, unfunny, juvenile, class-clown persona... NOT his poor acting ability... always, always "struggling for attention" in his personal life.

It's always those "mediocre actors"... the ones who WISH they really had "some unique skill" and OBVIOUSLY don't! Baldwin "defines" mediocre... at best :-)
