Justice Ginsburg, other passengers evacuated from United flight

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a passenger on a United Airlines flight that was evacuated, Wednesday, in Washington, D.C.

Passengers on a United Airlines flight — including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — were evacuated from a United Airlines jet via emergency chutes on Wednesday. The pilot reportedly deployed the plane's slides after reporting an engine issue to the tower.

"Justice Ginsburg was evacuated safely with the other passengers," a Supreme Court spokesperson told NBC News.

Ginsburg, 78, is the high court's oldest justice and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy for the cancer and was hospitalized on two other occasions last year but is maintaining an active travel schedule that is taking her across the country at least twice this summer.

Ginsburg was not injured during the evacuation, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Patricia McCabe Estrada.

United Flight 586 was scheduled to fly from Washington's Dulles International Airport to San Francisco. The plane, a Boeing 757, was carrying 179 passengers and six crew members, United spokesman Mike Trevino told msnbc.com.

"We're reviewing the situation," Trevino said.

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokeswoman Kimberly Gibbs said three people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation, two of whom refused treatment, and one was taken to a hospital.

Jodi Gersh, the director of social media for Gannett, was onboard the flight, and was posting updates via her Twitter account. "Passengers in front of me saw smoke out window and alerted attendants," she wrote at about 1 p.m. ET.  "No serious injuries as far as I can tell. It happened so fast and the attendants were amazing. I'm still shaking as I type this ...

"Hearing of possible broken bones, from the slide landing, but no other serious injuries. They've sent us to the admiral lounge to regroup."

The passengers were scheduled to depart at 3 p.m. ET on another aircraft, Trevino said.

Information from The Associated Press was included in this report.

All because a Supreme Court Justice was on board = was the only reason this Pilot ordered all emergency evacuation chutes to be deployed.

      Absolutely no other reason.

This Pilot pulled a "Steven Slater" by ordering the deploying of all emergency evacuation chutes = I counted 4 in the video.

No smoke in the cabin, no fire seen, no loud noise heard, no threats, etc. before = and no evidence of fire or any damage afterwards.

In my opinion, this was a case of abuse of power by the Pilot and I bet he - she does not get in trouble for it = I feel this way because =

My employment required I fly USA Coast to Coast Bi-Weekly for years and 4 times when the entire passenger cabin started filling with smoke = while still on the ground, of course, = the emergency evacuation chutes were never deployed.

It was not rolling, heavy, dense black smoke; just light colored, smoke; continuously coming out of all vents; but it was bad enough that before all passengers deplaned, they were gagging and coughing, etc.; with some worse than others. All the oxygen masks came down and we (passengers) were directed by flight crew over speaker system and cabin crew employees, there with us, to just hold something over our nose and mouths as we slowly deplaned.

When I heard various passengers complaining to Airline Officials, who came to the baggage pickup area to apologize, as to why the emergency evacuation chutes were not deployed = One Airline Official stated that because = according to all Federal and our own Airline safety procedures, smoke only does not justify a serious enough safety concern to deploy emergency evacuation chutes.

When accused of not deploying them due to the expense involved, this Airline Official finally stated that = yes, of course, the monetary expenses are factored in because the costs involved in the inspecting of the chutes and all associated mechanical parts and systems, etc. = and even if not damaged, the cost to repack each chute and have it recertified for use is over $5,000.00 each = and for a damaged chute the cost goes up to over $30,000.00 each for a new replacement chute. And all of the other monetary costs = for each hour the aircraft is out of commission, all costs associated with delayed passengers, rescheduling, preparing another aircraft for use, the unloading of all carry on luggage and all other stowed luggage, etc. and passengers having to pick up their luggage again and then having to check it all in again, etc. = is all factored in = to the procedures to be followed as to when emergency evacuation chutes are allowed to be deployed.

And in this case, smoke only did not justify deploying any chutes and the flight crew made the right call. Thank you, that is all I have to report except on behalf of so and so Airlines, I want to apologize to everyone for your delays and we will get everyone on another aircraft as soon as possible and on your way to your final destination. When questioned about the time frame = he said, due to lack of staff at this location, it would be from 4 to 6 hours to address all of these issues.

That is when I spoke up and said = regarding the costs associated with delayed passengers = we were offered nothing = so I believe each paying passenger should receive an airport voucher for $25.00 = to spend on any food, beverages, books, gifts, etc. while we are waiting here; due to a disabled aircraft. Which I thought was fair, because I could eat a large pasta meal with beverage, leave a tip, and purchase 4 books and still have change left over = but others did not and started demanding upwards to a free roundtrip fare in the same amount they paid = for their time in hours lost, etc.

This Airline Official said just one moment while he called to get approval, etc. To my surprise, he stated each paying passenger would receive a voucher for $100.00 and it was good not only at this airport; but at any airport this Airline serviced. And all paying passengers over the age of 21 were allowed access to this Airline's Private Club at this airport where we could spend our down time. I was already a member through my Employer, but that seemed to excite others more than the $100.00 voucher.

Yes, I really did appreciate the $100.00 voucher and put it to good use = and because of that = is why I did not name the Airline in this comment and also is the main reason that I continue to only Fly with this Airline, both professionally and personally.

I wonder if any of these passengers asked for a voucher = as they are not usually just handed out. Always Ask.

Good gravy, have you ever heard of a period?

An equal sign is not a punctuation symbol.

I doubt the Captain of the plane bothered to look and realize Justice Ginsburg was on the plane. Certainly, with her age and health status, had the Captain cared, he probably would have thought it safer for her to not evacuate with a slide.

There are many examples where a plane makes a completely safe emergency landing, but, instead of quickly evacuating the plane via the chutes, the Captain decides to continue to taxi in to the apron. In Riyadh in 1980, for example, 301 people where instantly incinerated when a flash fire suddenly flew through the cabin as it was taxiing. The crew would have had plenty of time to get everyone out safely had they used the chutes.

But, the fact remains that the Captain is the one who had the most information about what was happening in this incident, and the Captain is the one who is responsible for the safety of everyone on board.

You, lack of punctuation boy, know absolutely nothing except what is contained in this article. Your previous experience has absolutely no bearing on any new situation. You obviously would have rather killed all 185 people on board. Then you would probably try to second-guess the Captain again and say he should have blown the chutes.

She is so frail, was it safe for her to be in enviroment where cabin pressure is a variable?  I would have thought that even routine take offs and landings would be too much for her skeleton.

You need to learn take responsibility for your 40 years of life choices. Since Obama hasn't been President for 40 years, it looks like your life was "ruined" long before he began. As I said, take responsibility for your own life.

Pilots don't deploy the chutes (unless the pilots got out of their seats during an emergency and opened each door individually that has a chute). Get your facts straight.

Well that's not what it said. It said the pilot deployed the slides not ordered the deployment of the chutes. Maybe you only read half the article?

And do you even know how the chutes are deployed? The Captain would order an evacuation not the deployment of the chutes.

And what is a chute? Do you mean slide?

You won't find it as reaccomodated because re is a prefix meaning again and putting all the words that it can be put in front of would add 20 or more pages to the dictionary. If you look up "Re" in the dictionary, you might find a list of the words that it can be used for thus making them accepted words or in this case reaccepted words.

Don't journalists and editors understand English anymore? You evacuate a plane or a building... "to empty the contents of"... if the Justice evacuated, it means she crapped her pants.

It's the past tense of evacuate since it already is over with.

If she had to go down that slide, she might have done just that.....just saying!

The plane was evacuated, not Justice Ginsberg or the passengers.

You can evacuate a person, but you wouldn't want to :)!

The header I saw said "Justice Ginsburg Evacuated". I know what actually happened, thanks.

Both the plane was evacuated and the passengers were evacuated would be correct.

Ginsburg evacuated? i just thought she took a big dump. I thought maybe she was just inContinental now that they merged.

Huh.......so (at least one of) the supreme court justices fly commercial? That makes me feel a little happier about the world. If they are going to be deciding issues like airport security when one or two cases come their way, it seems fair that they experience it themselves. Nice.

To all of you who have given negative comments on this woman with cancer.. shame on you.  I will not stoop to your level and wish your family members get cancer and then speak negatively about them.  cannot stand when people say negative things about people who are deathly ill.  Actually, you are no better than terroists.

DKF- I agree with you . Too bad the tparty goons don't. They proved that the other night at the liars club debate, when compassionate old fart , Ron Paul , got cheers of 'let him die" from those great do as Jesus does creeps.

                                          No, I have it on good authority the passengers went to the Admiral Lounge (Strip Club) for free drinks and entertainment - Oh, calm down, I was just kidding! Glad nobody was hurt seriously - of course with the advent of PTSD, we'll have to wait and see! {:-)}

Thanks Gregorian!  Your comment on the nose.  Trolls seem to have no common sense for time and place to vent.  This wasn't one of them.

I wonder if all of the airline "mishaps" afflicting our public officials are meant to condition us for the series of unfortunate events that will lead to "President Boehner" ahead of the 2012 election...
