Tools to make summer travel a breeze

From Hipmunk to TripIt to the State Department's Smart Traveler, here are great apps and services to help you along in your summer wandering. Gadgetbox editor Wilson Rothman and msnbc.com senior travel editor Joy Jernigan discuss fresh and favorite tools to keep you in motion this summer.

It's summer – time to hit the road. Here are a few of our favorite apps and services to assist you along the way.

Hipmunk
http://www.hipmunk.com/
Hipmunk lets you search for a flight by cost, departure, date or agony – which also includes important factors like travel duration and how many stops you’ll make. The Hipmunk sliders make it easy to view the results, which show available flights color-coded by airline. Free. Available on iPhone and iPad.

TripIt
http://www.tripit.com/
TripIt makes it easy to integrate and organize your travel plans. Just e-mail your flight, rental car or hotel confirmations to plans@tripit.com. The app automatically creates a smart itinerary, so you can view your upcoming trips along with relevant maps, driving directions and more – all in one place. You can also easily share your travel plans with others. For an additional $49 a year, you can upgrade to TripIt Pro, which will keep you informed with flight status alerts and alternate flight options. Free. Available on the Android and both the iPhone and iPad.

MotionX-GPS Drive
http://drive.motionx.com/overview/
The MotionX-GPS Drive is the 2011 About.com Readers’ Choice Award winner for best auto navigation app. Load up both topographic and road maps, mark waypoints and more. Your purchase includes 30 days of live turn-by-turn navigation with voice guidance. After 30 days, you can make an in-app purchase of either the 30-day ($2.99) or one-year ($19.99) Live Voice Guidance package. Available on the iPhone (99 cents) and the iPad 3G ($2.99).

GasBuddy
http://www.gasbuddy.com/
With gas prices still far above last summer's, here's an app that should save drivers some cash this season. GasBuddy lets you search for the cheapest gas prices in your area – and filter by price as well as distance from your location. Free. Available on the iPhone, Android and Windows phone.

Smart Traveler
Released last month, the State Department’s Smart Traveler app allows travelers heading overseas to access travel alerts, travel warnings, maps and U.S. embassy locations. Smart Traveler also provides access to the State Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which enables the State Department to better assist you in the event of a natural disaster, political unrest or a lost/stolen passport overseas. Free. Compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
